The Ace Hotel New York debuts a month-long gallery exhibition and hosts a fashion show celebrating the textile archives of Portland’s Textile Hive.

For over a hundred years, South Whitfield Street has been the home of a distinctive five-storey building, the YMCA in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighbourhood—today, the city landmark has been transformed into the Ace Hotel chain’s first expansion into the northeast Rust Belt.

If you were to total the tonnage of a modest boutique hotel, the mass would be staggering. Hundreds of steel beams, acres of thin carpet, sheets of glass wall. So it is particularly impressive when a hotel is transparent.

The Vancouver Art Gallery plays hotelier this summer, hosting the much anticipated exhibition Grand Hotel: Redesigning Modern Life until September 15. The show was fastidiously curated by Jennifer M. Volland and Bruce Grenville, and after six years in the making, the results are fascinating.
