Back to the Future With the All-New wallypower58 Yacht

A case for the future with a wink to the past.

The wallypower58 brings to mind the expression “everything old is new again.” The latest addition to the storied Italian yacht builder’s fleet, the new 58 leverages every modern technology available in a forward-looking design that’s rooted in the past.

Stretching 17.3 metres in length and with a generous five-metre beam, the wedge-shaped wallypower58 improves upon the wallypower52 in a number of meaningful ways. But that isn’t the model that leaps to mind when seeing the new yacht for the first time. Rather, the new boat most strongly evokes the heritage of the original wallypower118, introduced way back in 2003.

“At Wally, we often say that our yachts are 20 years ahead of their time, and in this case that’s very much the reality, as the new wallypower58 honours the aesthetic of the ground-breaking wallypower118 some two decades after it was introduced to the world,” notes Wally managing director Stefano de Vivo. “Of course, we have also incorporated the manifold technical and practical innovations we have built up since 2003, ensuring the wallypower58 leads the way for yachts in its category for many years to come.”

Making its official debut at the Venice Boat Show last month, the wallypower58 retains the marque’s striking exterior aesthetic, including its pillarless curved glass, wide side promenades, and shaded lounge spaces that are otherwise open to the great outdoors. The new boat elevates the entire experience thanks to innovative engineering and inspired design.

Life’s a Beach

The stern beach club, for example, features outward-folding bulwark wings on each side of the boat that lower to deck level, expanding the cockpit deck area by a full 25 square metres.

The cockpit is dominated by a brilliantly executed centreline lounger with room for four adults to stretch out in comfort while enjoying the view across the stern and for another four to look forward, giving the space tremendous versatility.

If you need some space to stow your gear, you’ll find an enormous toy storage space underneath the sunpad lounge, accessed via two gullwing doors. Overhead, an optional electric awning extends over the lounge to provide additional sun protection.

One particularly slick bit of engineering in the wallypower58 is its hydraulic platform, which lowers into the water at the touch of a button to create a pied à l’eau area for guests of all ages and mobility levels to safely enjoy the water. Wally says this is a first on a vessel in this size class. For even greater versatility, the platform can also be used to launch or retrieve a jetski or tender of up to 2.9 metres in length.

Also unusual in a yacht this size is the hydraulic passerelle on the port side of the swim platform. Apart from providing safe and comfortable access to the boat when backed into the pier, the passerelle can also act as a swim ladder, giving access to the water when the hydraulic platform is being used for jetski or tender stowage.

La Dolce Vita

Stepping forward into the salon, the wallypower58 recalls the original wallypower118’s balance of interior style and comfort. The flowing cockpit top features an electric hatch to control ventilation. Twin flanking benches seat up to 16 guests around a large starboard-side table that unfolds to create a dining area.

The forward galley is split into two sections to preserve cabin flow and provide a more efficient workspace. The versatile layout allows buyers to select from a long list of refrigerators, icemakers, cooktops, and storage units.

The starboard-side helm provides twin seats before twin multifunction displays and joystick docking control, with power coming from Volvo Penta’s IPS system. The pillarless windows surrounding the helm—and the entire salon—offer unobstructed views, eliminating blind spots and enhancing navigational safety.

Power options for the wallypower58 include triple 550-horsepower IPS700 or 600-horsepower IPS800 units for a cruising speed of well over 30 knots. With its 3,000-litre fuel capacity, the wallypower58 has a range of 300 to 310 nautical miles, or 483 to 499 kilometres, giving it the legs to explore far and wide.

To the left of the helm console, a central passage leads below to a stylishly appointed cabin flooded with natural light.

The wallypower58 comes standard with a midships guest cabin that sleeps two and enjoys direct access to the day head and its separate shower. It is also possible to configure the boat in a double saloon version, with additional seating in place of the guest cabin, or in a crew version with a dedicated crew space. In all configurations, the master cabin in the bow features a queen-size bed and an ensuite with its own oversized standalone shower. An overhead deck hatch provides plenty of natural light.

As the wallypower118 raised eyebrows 20 years ago with its balance of comfort, style, and performance, the all-new wallypower58 seems set to carry the brand forward into the next decade and beyond. Anyone looking for a powerful, capable, and luxurious sport yacht will find a lot to like here.
