When Dior Addict Lip Glow debuted in 2009, it became a must-have beauty staple. The pigmented lip balm, a pioneering hybrid of skin care and makeup, was released in various shades, but its hallmark was the formulation reacting to the individual pH balance of each wearer that created a final colour unique to them. “I have been at Dior for over 10 years, and since day one we have been looking into how to expand this range,” says Peter Philips, creative and image director of Dior makeup. The Addict Lip Glow “formula is a complicated process, and we finally cracked the code for the pH reaction.”

Cracking that code involved the use of a key ingredient, eosin, whose colourant properties allowed Dior to create the original cool-toned shades, yet for the first time, its compounds were reworked to bring a new palette of warm colours to life. The original Pink 001 is joined by more juicy pinks, fruity and coral reds, intense wild berry and sweet candy shades, alongside ice-cool pastels (think frosted icy blue) and natural nudes.

Long before the influence of social media, Addict Lip Glow “went viral before we even knew what viral was,” Philips says, recounting the story of how the balm shot to fame thanks to a televised sporting event as an athlete spontaneously applied Lip Glow on live TV. “The next day, the product was all sold out.” Over the years, Addict Lip Glow has been “rediscovered over and over again by new fans, new generations, in new contexts,” he explains, with reportedly one Addict Lip Glow selling every three seconds.

Customers can be very sensitive when a brand’s hero product gets reformulated, but Philips assures that “we didn’t pollute something which was great.” The new high-tech Dior Addict Lip Glow is an evolution, composed of 97 per cent lip-care base that gives 48 hours of moisturization. Cherry oil contributes to the moisture-lock technology, and the properties of shea butter and sunflower help lock moisture in the lips.

The “yummy sticks,” as Philips refers to the colourful range of Addict Lip Glow, make for seductive lips you want to kiss.
