What to See and Where to Go at IDS Vancouver 2019

Designer's Delight.

The Interior Design Show is kicking off in Vancouver, running September 26 to 29 at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. As designers and design enthusiasts flock to British Columbia, many will inevitably be overwhelmed by the extensive event schedule. But this doesn’t have to be the case—we asked locals and industry insiders what they were most excited about in order to create a brief list of must-sees.

These picks include both on- and off-site events, and not all are open to the public. IDS offers tickets to individual events as well as general passes that open the door to the many design, culinary, and social events the show has to offer.

Design encompasses so much good work in so many niches; without further ado, our picks:

Marije Vogelzang

As a featured designer, Marije Vogelzang should be at the top of every list, because frankly, she’s earned it. A Dutch citizen and a graduate of the renowned Eindhoven school, her project—SEEDS—is a collaboration with Caesarstone. Using an extensive background garnered at restaurants in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, Vogelzang looks at the intersection of history, visceral realities, and memory with culinary habits. Using cuisine, design, and performance, SEEDS is meant to heighten thoughtfulness around food by highlighting its journey from seedling to highly specific meal. You might even get to see the designer with a rooster on her head (her iconic trademark)!

When: SEEDS will run from September 26th to the 29th, and Vogelzang will give a talk at the Caesarstone stage on Friday the 27th at 3:30 p.m.

Poketo

An L.A. start-up turned design hub, Poketo offers designs as cute as its name and twice as stylish. Founded by Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung, the store offers products that give a fresh, West Coast twist to Memphis School–era designs: pastel colours, non-linear patterns, and minimalism. Poketo’s designs are fun and functional. The team is not afraid to venture into kitsch and pop culture, and their meteoric rise makes them interesting to fans and aspiring designers alike.

When: The Poketo pop-up shop will be open from the 26th to the 29th, and the founders will give a talk at the Caesarstone stage on Friday the 27th at 11:30 a.m.

Vignettes

While the show features many established designers and labels, its programming leaves space for the future of design. Located at one of the off-site venues, Vignettes brings together a coterie of up-and-coming designers. The stories and intersections that will form at this event might just be a cypher for Canadian design to come, and every single name on the roster represents exciting stories and deft craft. Hosted by a different Vancouver firm each night, Vignettes is not to be missed.

When: September 26th to the 28th at 505 Railway Street

Inform Interiors and Herschel Launch Party

Few people can walk through Vancouver’s historic Gastown neighbourhood without stopping and gaping at the airy and rugged chicness of Herschel’s North American flagship store. The company, which has become synonymous with its white-label backpacks with red-striped interiors, has recently collaborated with Inform Interiors. The party that marks this collaboration will be a powerhouse event in Vancouver design and one for the books.

When: September 28th, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 347 Water Street.

ANDlight

A Vancouver outfit through and through, ANDlight offers a truly avant-garde approach to interior lighting. Anyone who has ever lived in the Pacific Northwest knows how important lighting is—for both the vibe of a room and for staying sane as the daylight dwindles to nearly nothing in the winter. With stripped down, almost planet-like fixtures, ANDlight is making lights for the future world we all desire.

Lukas Peet, creative director of ANDlight, and others will give a talk at the GRAY Stage on September 29th at 2 p.m.

When: ANDlight will take part in the aforementioned Vignettes, as well as the installation called Temporary Bar Service at 105 Powell Street, from September 26th to the 29th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
