Lululemon’s Original Store, Revamped

Kitsilano est. 1998.

“You always remember your first.” So reads a retro sign, once a symbol for a Kitsilano auto repair shop, now a billboard for the cheeky slogan of yogawear megabrand Lululemon’s renovated original location.

Now that the company is old enough to drink, it was time for the original Vancouver location to be revisited—given a little love for old times’ sake in the form of a multi-level expansion that sees its total square footage rise to 6,300, with separate men’s and women’s sides and a rooftop patio dedicated to community events.

To emphasize the locality and nostalgia of the original flagship, a few key design elements were left intact—namely, steel filing cabinets plastered in skateboard company stickers dating back from founder Chip Wilson’s fresh-from–Westbeach Snowboard Ltd. days. Local driftwood has also been integrated throughout the shop and a barnacled rock acts as a door stop, while a mural by Vancouver artist Paige Bowman depicts hikers traversing Grouse Mountain, and surfers hitting the waves.

By all accounts, this refreshed Lululemon location feels like home.
