New Book by Dior Champions the Work of Female Photographers That Embody Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Feminine Spirit

Maria Grazia Chiuri got the fashion world talking when she paired a T-shirt reading “We Should All Be Feminists” with a midnight blue tulle skirt and sneakers for her debut collection for the house of Dior in 2016. (Chiuri took inspiration from writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of a 2014 essay examining feminism in the 21st century.) Chiuri’s appointment as the first female artistic director of Dior was a much-discussed milestone in the lead-up to her premier collection, spring/summer 2017, for the maison; and she chose to use her first collection for Dior as a call for women’s equality.

This T-shirt is now the cover of Her Dior: Maria Grazia Chuiri’s New Voice, to be unveiled for International Woman’s Day by Rizzoli in New York. The beautifully produced 240-page anthology presents images by trailblazing female photographers such as Brigitte Niedermair, Sarah Blais, Bettina Rheims, Sarah Moon, Cass Bird, and Julia Hetta. The images produced by the collective of 33 creatives represent Chiuri’s manifesto: fashion for women by women. Thought-provoking quotes and poems accompany the striking photographs.

“My dream, my aspiration is that we women should look at each other with our own eyes. And this is also why I believe it is so important to use a woman’s eye in the images that talk about all of us,” Chiuri writes in the book’s preface. The Rome-born designer assumes one of the most powerful roles in the industry, overseeing womenswear and haute couture for the LVMH-owned maison, and has chosen to work solely with female photographers. Her Dior is a celebration of the female gaze.
