Stay at Chopard’s Jewel of a Hotel Located Above Its Parisian Flagship
1, Place Vendôme is the jewellery brand's vision of hospitality.
Unlike the glittering storefronts of Place Vendôme, which dazzle with diamond displays, Paris’s newest boutique hotel shines more discreetly. Marked only by an attentive doorman and a small plaque indicating its name and address, 1, Place Vendôme is the latest venture from Chopard and the Scheufele family, who have extended the maison’s world of jewellery and timepieces to include a confidential hotel above its flagship Paris boutique.
Creating a home-like feeling was central in bringing 1, Place Vendôme to life. The Scheufele family personally oversaw the five-year transformation of the historic 18th-century property alongside French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, who had already made his mark on the Chopard boutique downstairs. Each of the five rooms and 10 suites is distinct, from the rich decor of La Chambre Jade, where gold and red florals, black-lacquer furnishings, and geometric patterns take design cues from Chinese art and household objects, to the subtle soft pinks of La Chambre Diamant. In La Suite Boussole, one of the few rooms not named after a precious stone, Rochon has taken a more masculine approach with shades of grey, dark-wood furnishings, and a houndstooth-clad sofa. But it’s L’Appartement Chopard that is the jewel in the crown. The Versailles-inspired apartment has been restored to its original 18th-century grandeur and features double-height ceilings, parquet flooring, marble fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, and ornate wall mouldings that took a team of four artisans three months to gild.
At the heart of the hotel is a series of rooms chicly dressed in classic shades of off-white, black, and grey warmed up with wood-panelled wallsand rich oak furnishings. Artwork by the likes of Chagall and Warhol comes from the Scheufele family’s private collection. Guests can take their morning coffee in the library and borrow a book from the collection curated by the family: anything on automobiles was chosen by Chopard co-president Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, whilst the surprising collection of Texan tomes references the building’s short-lived moment as the Embassy of the Republic of Texas. Afternoon tea is served in the Jardin d’Hiver, where Chopard’s Animal World haute joaillerie inspired the colourful wall mosaic, hand laid with Venetian tiles framed by green marble and surrounded with leafy foliage.
Capping off the collection of public spaces is the hotel’s bar, which, unlike the palace hotels or the neighbouring Bar Hemingway, is open only to clients and their invited guests. Beside it, a concealed door leads to the secret cigar lounge. Furnished with gold-on-red De Gournay wallpaper and leather armchairs, the intimate space offers an exclusive view onto Paris’s prestigious Rue Saint-Honoré.
