NUVO Magazine: The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics

BMW’s latest design and powertrain study may have a clinical-sounding name, but beneath the avant-garde skin and lab coat–tested powertrain beats the heart of an ultimate driving machine. The name, Vision EfficientDynamics, doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but that aside, BMW has a dynamite idea with this concept car, which is rumoured to be entering production.

The EfficientDynamics demonstrates that sustainable objectives are fully compatible when applied to a sports car. Conceived as a 2+2 seater with plug-in hybrid technology, the car combines the performance of the BMW M vehicle with fuel efficiency and emission management that exceeds the levels currently delivered by small cars. The power provided by the two electric motors and single diesel 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine gives the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept a level of performance superior to anything provided so far by a hybrid vehicle.

This Vision EfficientDynamics is quite realistic, unlike other UFO-like concepts, and there is no denying that the designers—Mario Majdandzic (exterior design) and Jochen Paesen (interior design) under the direction of head of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk—are talented. The car continues to rack up accolades, and the Louis Vuitton Classic Concept Awards jury recently gave the Vision EfficientDynamics its namesake award for 2010.
