Get to Know the Marrimor Toof

The signature piece from the Vancouver-based design studio.

The idea wasn’t complicated: a footstool that could be tucked away at the end of the day. It seemed so obvious that designers Tanja Breadner and Lauren Bugliarisi, of the Vancouver-based design studio Marrimor, couldn’t believe it hadn’t been done. “We did a ton of research to ensure we weren’t knocking on a door that was already open,” says Bugliarisi, who founded Marrimor in 2008. “But it turned out this simple concept didn’t exist on the market.”

And so the Toof—part table, part pouf—was born. Available in fabrics from mohair to Italian wool and powder-coated metal colour combos, the Toof quickly became a signature piece. Recently, the duo took their wares global, debuting the Toof as well as Draft, a new line of rugs, at the design platform Alcova for Milan Design Week this past April.

Though Marrimor products are currently sold through its website and at M2L, a luxury furniture showroom in New York, Breadner says inquiries from Canadian showrooms increased after Milan. “We’re working on a sofa next,” she says of the goal to release one new product per year. “Even on a hard day, we remind ourselves that we have a really cool job.”
