The Beauty of Austrian Minimalism Awaits at Gasthof Krone

Where life’s little pleasures are celebrated.

Surrounded by the green pastures of the Austrian Alps, with cow bells ringing in the distance, a stay at the Gasthof Krone is a leisurely experience. Whether it’s enjoying deliciously crisp cream pastries in the library or a well-chilled Austrian wine in the restaurant, life’s little pleasures are celebrated in the historic hotel in Austria’s alpine region.

The Gasthof Krone’s third-generation hoteliers Helene Nussbaumer-Natter and Dietmar Nussbaumer prefer to be called innkeepers as Helene’s parents were when they ran the hotel. When Helene and Dietmar took over in 2005, the couple continued the Krone’s tradition of celebrating local craftsmanship.

The hotel’s furnishings are in stark contrast to the building’s exterior, which looks ancient to the average passerby. Dietmar and Helene encourage guests to run their fingers along the staircase banister, bedposts, and cabinets in the rooms to appreciate the fine workmanship. Unlike many boutique hotels where flashy furnishings fill the rooms, the Gasthof Krone’s interiors reflect a simple philosophy: honour true craftsmanship.

The Gasthof Krone is one of several buildings in the Bregenzerwald region that celebrate and promote local craftsmen and designers. Many well-known architectural firms based in the area contribute to the Werkraum Bregenzerwald, an association that supports local craftsmen.

The hotel’s 27 guest rooms feature hand-made Bregenzerwald furnishings that combine comfort with design. There are pillowcases and bedspreads by Vorarlberg’s Hefel bedding manufacturer and beds fitted with Vita Nova II mattresses for a perfect night’s sleep. The garden sauna, designed by architect Bernardo Bader, was built by members of the Werkraum Bregenzerwald.

For gourmands, the Krone restaurant also supports local producers with its exquisite menu by chef Michael Garcia-Lopez. Be sure to ask host Dietmar for his wine recommendation, which is likely to be from a heralded Austrian winery.
