Christian Woo’s Precision-Crafted Modernism

For the love of wood.

Sculptural and minimal, Vancouver-based furniture designer and woodworker Christian Woo’s pieces speak for themselves. Working out of his North Vancouver studio, Woo draws inspiration from the natural materials and vast scale of the Pacific Northwest landscape. His minimal forms allow a greater focus on the texture and qualities of the wood itself.

He was first exposed to design and craft through his grandfather, who was an artist and woodworker. Although accepted at OCAD, Woo instead trained as a cabinetmaker, opening his own studio in 2006. From his geometric Noga series to his Diptiq tables that explore proportion, his body of work is a reminder of the timeless beauty of prototypical shapes and understated forms.

His reach has since expanded and evolved. This past year has included a collaboration with the Italian furniture brand Zanotta, for which Woo produced a series of geometric side tables and poufs. He also collaborated with Omar Gandhi Architects, completing a monumental table with asymmetrical cylinder pedestal bases for Fisher & Paykel’s Toronto Experience Centre. During Vancouver’s Interior Design Show, Woo will exhibit new work as a window installation at Gastown’s Inform, including custom large-scale pieces.
