Calgary’s Best Ice Cream Sandwiches

Three must-visit shops.

If there’s one thing that all Calgarians can agree upon, it’s that summer passes by in a flash. It’s no wonder we have a booming ice cream scene: from charcoal soft serve at Luke’s Drug Mart to Japanese-inspired fish-shaped waffle cones at Uzu Taiyaki, we take our summer treats very seriously. Of course, the king of all ice cream is the ice cream sandwich. Here, we present three of the very best ice cream sandwiches in YYC to help you ride those sweet, sunshiny feelings all the way into autumn.

Iceworks Frozen Treats
Sophisticated, gorgeous, and utterly unique, Iceworks’ macaron ice cream sandwiches were dreamed up by husband-and-wife team Tania and Edmund Lam after a trip to Hong Kong. “Hong Kong’s food scene is amazing–it has so much to offer that you’ll never be bored,” says Tania. “There are all these little shops that specialize in just one or two items. We realized how much fun Calgary was missing out on, and we wanted to bring that experience back with us.” With Asian-inspired flavours like taro, black sesame, and matcha, along with classics like strawberry and vanilla bean, there is a sandwich here for everyone. Tania recommends the Coconut Pandan, which she describes as subtly floral and deliciously different. Multiple locations.

Made by Marcus
Any Calgarian worth their salt knows that Made by Marcus is a clear choice when it comes to richly flavourful, handcrafted ice cream. With a bachelor in food science and a masters in nutrition, founder Marcus Purtzki has all the credentials to bring his culinary vision to the cone, bowl, and of course, the ice cream sandwich. Pick up a three-pack at their 17th Avenue microcreamery or at one of these retailers. Just be sure to call ahead—these decadent morsels tend to sell out fast. 1013 17 Ave SW #121.

Frozen Assets Ice Cream Co.
Hunting down Frozen Assets ice cream sandwiches can be an adventure—but one with some seriously mouthwatering spoils. Founders Leah Aull and Alex Burgess both come from culinary backgrounds, and first discovered their passion for good ice cream while making small batches for restaurants. “We bought an old ice cream machine and an old truck named Elsie, took some time off of work, and just started organically growing,” says Aull. Every Frozen Assets sandwich has a story—the Peanut Butter Wolf, a peanut butter cookie sandwich with spiced chocolate ice cream, was named after a favourite DJ, and the Rhubarb Crumble sandwich is made with rhubarb from a friend’s garden. Get your Frozen Assets fix at The Beltliner, or catch Elsie at Calgary events over the summer by keeping up with their Instagram.
