Conversation Piece

Enjoy our Sunday series, Conversation Piece, a NUVO-curated digest of things on the Internet we think you’ll want to talk about.

Personal agenda. Most people imagine a calendar as a table of seven columns in a series of rows. But there are those, about one per cent, who picture different shapes—such as a hula hoop or a mirrored check mark. Ed Yong at The Atlantic investigates these “calendar forms”, what they are, and how they might prove beneficial. Read more, here.

David Lynch cooks quinoa. Need we say more? In a delightfully eerie monochromatic video, the director walks through the preparation of quinoa and broccoli, regaling the viewer with the personal story involving a European train ride, “frog moths”, and a first-time Coca-Cola experience while the grain cooks. Many websites have taken it up on themselves to type out the recipe for ease, but wouldn’t you rather hear it from Lynch himself? Watch here.

Chicken of the trees. They’re cute, and they’re rodents; for these reasons we don’t think about eating urban squirrels. And yet, squirrel is a historically significant protein source. It’s plentiful. It yields dense, tasty meat. And it grazes sustainably on discarded pizza crusts and backyard produce. For the Chicago Reader, Mike Sula culls and cooks his garden’s key assailant, with unexpected results. Learn more.

Merry Christmas, Wes. You’d be quite the Grinch to resist the charm of Swedish clothing line H&M’s 2016 holiday campaign—a short film, starring Adrian Brody, directed by whimsy-Meister Wes Anderson, set on a perfectly seafoam-green train where, with a little luck, Christmas is saved. Watch it here.
