Canada’s Dog-Friendly Luxury Hotels

Throw us a bone.

“Everybody needs a little time away,” crooned Peter Cetera back in 1980-something. Granted that song was about love going wrong rather than taking a holiday, but still, the words resonate. If you’re looking for a seasonal reset, a spontaneous mini-break, or a staycation to recalibrate your energy while keeping planning logistics to minimum, pick a place that will roll out the welcome mat for your four-legged family member, too. Taking Fido with you ramps up the relaxation factor (no guilt)—especially when you can work dog walkers or a pet sitter into the experience. Here, five luxe Canadian getaways that cater to the family pet and, of course, you.

The Loden, Vancouver

Known for its stylish, luxe boutique vibe in the heart of downtown, the Loden takes great pride in its pet experience. Dogs are greeted by name as special guests and kitted out with comfy beds, bowls, a leash, and towels to dry off from rainy strolls. The hotel offers an extensive dog mini-bar-like treat selection—all natural and many locally produced. A dog-walk map of the Coal Harbour seawall (plus pick-up bags) sets everyone up for a scenic outing. They offer dog walking and pet-sitting services (cost is not included). There is no limit to weight or size of your dog but they ask that dogs not be left alone in the rooms. $45 fee per pet per stay. 1177 Melville Street, Vancouver, BC.

Fairmont Empress, Victoria

The Fairmont chain is known across Canada for welcoming dogs, and the recently refurbished, historic Empress hotel in B.C.’s capital is no exception. This stately grande dame looks out over the harbour in downtown Victoria and is a perfect weekend city retreat for you and your dog: both of you get luxurious sleeping accommodations, where your pup can lounge while you take in the Empress’s legendary afternoon tea. The concierge can recommend the best dog-friendly walks and activities. $25 nightly fee. 721 Government Street, Victoria, BC.

Nita Lake Lodge, Whistler

Whistler offers a snowy winter getaway where dogs can romp free in the fluffy stuff, and Nita Lake Lodge welcomes all sizes of dogs and will accommodate up to two per stay. The luxury lakeside lodge provides oversized, plush dog beds, water bowls, and dog treats. The Valley Trail, right at the lodge’s doorstep, is a spectacular scenic, and for an off-leash experience, there is a dog park nearby at Alpha Lake. $25 per night, per pet fee. 2131 Lake Placid Road, Whistler, BC.

The Hazelton, Toronto

Yorkville is arguably one of the chicest districts in Canada, so a trip to the groomer may be well-advised before checking into the elegant Hazelton. Beautifully situated for humans to peruse high-end shops and restaurants, the hotel is steps from the Village of Yorkville Park, where you can stroll and watch locals and their dogs on their weekend outings. Also within walking distance is Queen’s Park, which offers wider grassy expanses for playtime. The Hazelton provides bed, dishes, treats, and pick-up bags, and the concierge has a list of vets, groomers, walkers, and sitters. $125 per pet stay, advise at time of booking. 118 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto, ON.

Loews Vogue Hotel, Montreal

Eighteen years ago, the Loews Hotel chain launched its Very Important Pets (VIP) program that welcomed pets with an extensive range of amenities that included beds, bowls leashes, pick-up bags, leashes, treats, toys, dog-walking maps, and even gourmet room service. Located in downtown Montreal, the Art Deco-inspired Loews Vogue is in the heart of shopping, restaurants, and night life, but prides itself on ensuring both guests and their pets have a luxurious experience. They offer dog walking and pet-sitting services (cost extra), along with a list of resources for pets. One-time fee of $25 per stay, limit of two dogs per room. 1425 Rue De La Montagne, Montréal, QC.
