The Transportive Scents of Paraphrase Perfume

When Joshua Smith was studying industrial design at the University of Alberta, he fell headfirst into the world of scent. What began as a school project over 10 years ago is now his indie fragrance brand Paraphrase Perfume. “I think of perfumes as paintings,” says the perfumer, who aims to create scents that express earthy elements and have a transportive quality. The 10-scent Paraphrase Perfume collection is handcrafted in Smith’s studio in Edmonton. Vegan ingredients sourced from South America, Europe, Africa, and Canada are used to make the perfume blends in small batches of around 100 bottles, each of which is topped with a carved walnut cap.
