The Duniway, Portland

Downtown Portland, Oregon’s the Duniway is a calm reprieve from its business district surroundings with a design that reflects the warmth and approachability of the city itself. Named for women’s rights advocate Abigail Scott Duniway, who successfully petitioned for the vote in the state, the 327-room Duniway is a Hilton property aspiring to transcend the norms of traditional city hotels. Toronto-based interior design firm DesignAgency saw the company’s vision through, crafting an elegant space with a sense of cool ease. Step into the revolving doors and a custom-designed botanical glass screen will catch your eye first—the piece pays homage to Portland’s native ecology, and creates a lively connection between the interior and exterior.
“We wanted guests to feel like they had ‘arrived’ in Portland, but also experience something very different than what the city currently has to offer,” says DesignAgency’s Allen Chan. “It had to feel like you were walking into someone’s home.” Indeed, details like Persian carpets, brass lamps, curios, chairs upholstered in peacock velvets and tufted brown leathers, and books (the Duniway has a partnership with Portland’s legendary Powell Books to supply reading material to rooms and common spaces) give the hotel a comfortable, lived-in feel.
A white oak floor demarcates the start of the restaurant and bar area. Indeed, chef Chris Cosentino’s much-anticipated new JackRabbit restaurant is one of the space’s local draws. Meat and offal reign here—as evidenced by primordial menu items like a whole pig’s head, giant bone-in steaks, and beef heart tartare (as well as oysters—this is the Pacific Northwest, after all).
The Duniway is charming, centrally-located, and thoughtfully redesigned—a warm home for any visit to the City of Roses.
