Heffel Fine Art Auction House
This season, the Heffel Fine Art Auction House brings Lawren Harris’s 1926 masterpiece Mountain Forms to the auction block following its starring role in The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris, the critically acclaimed exhibition co-curated by actor Steve Martin, which toured major North American galleries including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and most recently the Art Gallery of Ontario. And while the sale of Mountain Forms alone could distinguish the auction as monumental for the Canadian art market, Heffel’s fall 2016 collection will also include an unprecedented additional live auction session featuring the single most valuable single-consignor collection ever to come to the Canadian block—The Peter & Joanne Brown Collection. The session is conservatively estimated to reach sales of $12 million to $17 million, and includes a selection of 90 artworks from the noted Canadian businessman’s vast collection, including pieces by Alex Colville of the Maritimes, Emily Carr and Bill Reid of British Columbia, and all original and later members of the Group of Seven. Additional highlights of the season include Iris bleus, jardin du Petit Gennevilliers, an 1892 oil on canvas by French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte, who this year was honoured with an exhibition at the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and Toronto artist A.J. Casson’s Country Crisis, considered by many to be his most famous work. See additional highlights, above.
The four-session live Heffel fall 2016 auction will take place on Wednesday, November 23 at Design Exchange (The Historic Trading Floor, 234 Bay Street, Toronto).
