The Skin Girls, Vancouver
Secret’s out.
Most businesses welcome exposure, but for years the Skin Girls—a Vancouver medi-spa—took the opposite approach, providing exclusive esthetic treatments in pseudo-secrecy for the benefit of its celebrity clientele. Now, however, with a new move to a large space in Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood, things have changed—slightly. “We outgrew our former space, and when I was looking for a new spot, one of the key things was—was I still going to do a secret location?” says owner Lisa-Marie Blair, a former actor and stunt performer, who switched into the beauty industry full time 11 years ago. “I went with a storefront, but one with a backdoor—we have a lot of actors who come here, and they can be dropped off discreetly.”
Once inside, everyone is privy to the celebrity treatment. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, and the services top-notch—Blair works to ensure the latest treatments from L.A. are available in her spa, from acne-reducing LED light mask therapy, to “vampire facials”, to Forma skin tightening and cellulite-smoothing BodyFX. Product lines include the results-oriented Is Clinical and Colorescience. The clinic’s most popular service is the oxygen facial—a regular treatment for the cast members of locally-filmed shows when they need to look their best. (The cast of the CW Network’s Riverdale schedule them regularly).
“I want people to feel comfortable when they come in, and to give them a bit of a confidence boost,” says Blair. It is comforting to entrust your skin’s care to a professional who is accustomed to working with those for whom appearance and livelihood are linked. When it comes to looking your best, the secret is out.
