Pablo Reinoso’s Spaghetti Bench Series

Art unravelled.

In 2006, Pablo Reinoso put a twist on the standard wooden park bench with the first in his Spaghetti Bench series. The Argentina-born, France-based sculptor unravelled the utilitarian design by stretching the wooden slats away from their architectural duty in pursuit of liberated growth.

Reinoso has since experimented with steel, its durability allowing for an outdoor setting for public interaction, as seen this past October at FIAC, Paris’ international contemporary art fair, where two benches sat opposite the Grand Palais. In September, Bordeaux’s Agora biennale placed his L’Observatoire du ciel atop a reflective pool, immersing those seated in a topsy-turvy landscape, the sculptures’ loose tendrils unfolding in the mist.
