“I’ve always been fascinated by what it means to live the American Dream,” says artist Angie Crabtree. There’s perhaps no single object that better encapsulates the sparkling commodification of that dream than a diamond, which Crabtree puts under a microscope in her hyper-realistic paintings.
The Italian town of Assisi now houses a beautifully designed retail space for A. Gallo, the luxury paint brand known for combining rich raw pigments with honey, rosemary, and gum arabic to create environmentally friendly watercolour paints. And while the paints are clearly the star of the show, the new showroom’s design also vies for attention.
The garments, made exclusively from reconstructed vintage material, both represent the ways the male gaze in art has contained women and, at the same time, defy that pattern of possession. “ ‘Downfall’ romanticizes a new era of art-making where women are each other’s muse, not captured by men, and corruption is their aim,” McCormack says.
