Mirrored Mirage

Artistic reflection.

Mirrored Mirage, Of Note, Spring 2017

Mirage is not a figment of the viewer’s imagination, but a physical embodiment of the artist’s imagination. This site-specific installation from Doug Aitken rises out of the desert in Palm Springs—between the San Jacinto Mountains and the Coachella Valley—as a kaleidoscopic vision of the suburban home. But this ranch-style piece of art-architecture is devoid of inhabitants and clad in mirrors to reflect the changing desert landscape, light, and onlookers. The monument, which opened to the public as part of the inaugural Desert X art exhibition in February, is on display until October 31. Seek out the diamond in the rough this summer during a California road trip—you’ll be glad you did.
