Celebrating the Most Exceptional Design Projects on Canada’s West Coast

Julia Dilworth’s newly released book West Coast North: Interiors Designed for Living celebrates the talented designers working on Canada’s West Coast. Having written extensively on design for publications like Western Living, Vancouver Magazine, and BCLiving, she employs her expertise in this visual-heavy exploration of West Coast design. An abundant source of inspiration, the 256 pages of interior designs invite poring over and bookmarking.
“These are interiors that seek to bring the outdoors in and to harness natural light without detracting from the view,” Dilworth explains in the book. “Natural materials, like stone and wood, and organic textures, are fixtures on the Canadian West Coast, but their execution is evolving.”

West Coast North not only highlights the best of West Coast modernism but also reveals how designers are challenging norms. It profiles prominent West Coast architecture and design studios, describing a selection of their notable projects, with full-colour photographs accompanying each section.
Among those included is Vancouver’s Leckie Studio Architecture + Design and its imaginative, forward-thinking projects, including Vancouver House Penthouse and its lush, open-air atrium. Also featured is Superflux {Cabana} byStudio Roslyn, whose colourful work extends beyond typical West Coast modernism. The interior of the 1960s-inspired restaurant in Victoria brings together contrasting prints, a draped burlap ceiling, and botanical accents. And the sustainability-focused approach of Gaile Guevara Studio is displayed in Full House in Vancouver, completed alongside project architect Leckie Studio, which balances privacy and community interaction.
