The Sixth Annual Italian Contemporary Film Festival

Celebrating Italian-Canadian talent.

The best of contemporary Italian cinema from around the world makes its way to Canada for the sixth annual Italian Contemporary Film Festival. This year, in honour of Ontario’s 150th+ anniversary and Canada 150+, the festival has included a week-long, free-admission screening series of Italian-Canadian films called, From Bello to Beautiful: The Art and Impact of Italian Canadian Cinema.

This special series, which largely takes place in Toronto, opens with director Peter Gentile’s film Noelle’s Journey, a documentary that tells the story of two men who immigrated to Canada from Southern Italy. Two other highlights from the series are also documentaries: The Future Ways of Living by Marcello Ferrara and George Brown University, which follows a group of progressive thinkers at the World Expo in Milan; and Silvio Soldini’s 2016 film, Il Fiume ha sempre ragione/The River is Always Right—a profile of two Italian typography artists keeping one of the world’s oldest professions alive with their inventiveness, poetry, and well-honed skill.

Running from June 8 to 16 in six cities across the country (Toronto, Vaughan, Hamilton, Montreal, Quebec City, and for the first time, Vancouver) the festival will showcase 180 films in total, including features, shorts, and documentaries. With June being Italian Heritage Month, it’s an ideal time to, as the festival’s tagline goes, “let Italian cinema feed you.”
