Nixon’s The Mission
Android Wear for adventurers.
The first generation of wristwatches were made to tick and tock. A new generation is made to twist and traverse and defy expectations for what a watch can withstand. Newly released by Nixon, the Mission is billed as the world’s first action sports smartwatch. Specifically, it is a piece of Android Wear designed to suit the needs of surfers and snowboarders.
For active riders, the wrist is prime real estate. With smartphones, bonafide lifelines, sealed off by labyrinths of zippers, it’s hard to beat on convenience of having all necessary information available at a glance. Yet, where past iterations of the smartwatch have been vulnerable to the elements, the Mission’s critical bells and whistles are encased in a hulking 48mm thick design, all customizable with a polycarbonate case, stainless steel bezel, and a layer of Gorilla Glass crystal to protect the full color touchscreen.
Though an undeniable statement piece, the Mission isn’t a smartwatch for show. It’s one for Tofino, or Revelstoke—it’s one for the bumpy road.
The Mission’s 100-meter water resistance rating is the highest on the market, taking the smartwatch to a new, below-sea level, allowing surfers to bring it along for the ride. Likewise, snowboarders can shred as they please without worrying about the touchscreen: even covered in melting snow, it still works. An independent GPS system, not tethered to a smartphone like initial smartwatches, allows for free navigation and added safety.
To help plan for adventures, a pre-loaded Mission app works with SnoCountry and Surfline to source live snow and surf conditions, while the system tracks activity and performance for review. Brainy and brawny, this is a watch geared towards the future—and the future looks fun.
Nixon’s The Mission is now available online through Empire, starting at $479.95, and also at select stockists throughout Canada.
