Channelling Calmer Waters, Burdifilek Brings a Fresh Take to the Superyacht
The Toronto-based interiors firm completed its first yacht, eschewing flashy design for a fluid scheme focused on the sea.
Ask an interiors firm to design a home, and you’re likely meeting them on solid ground. Ask the same firm to design a home on water? For many, that’s shaky territory. But the opportunity to offer a fresh perspective was an undeniable strength for Burdifilek, the Toronto-based design firm that just completed Entourage, a 63-metre-long yacht that marks the firm’s first voyage into maritime interiors.
With the help of builder Damen Yachting, Burdifilek created an out-of-the-ordinary design, turning away from loud and splashy interiors that sometimes weigh down typical yachts for a scheme that is quiet and subtle. Burdifilek sought interiors that seamlessly connected with their surroundings—an open conversation with the sky and sea.
The vessel’s softer side is perhaps most pronounced in the main deck’s salon, where curved fumed-oak walls and finishes lightly frame floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing dramatic views of the sea. Sunshine pours into the salon, where rounded furniture (including a plump Pierre Augustin Rose sofa and swivel chairs by Studio Piet Boon) is upholstered in sweet hues like blush and white atop sand-coloured carpet. By keeping the interiors in soft focus, the boundaries between inside and outside dissolve—interiors are at one with their environment.
The palette shifts ever so slightly in the stateroom, the yacht’s primary suite. Grey leather panels blanket the walls, and furnishings take on soft pastels and blue tones, still channelling the azure Mediterranean. Pewter-toned accents, from textured bedside tables to tabletop decor, hint at the shimmery waters just beyond the window.
At the core of the vessel is a ribbony, spiralling staircase custom designed by Burdifilek. Enveloped by leather walls, its metal handrail twists like the inside of a seashell, while an organic shape cut into the wall diffuses a pink-lavender glow across the stairwell. The feature just might make you stop and stare, but it doesn’t lose the subtlety and fluidity of the yacht’s tranquil design.
Nature flows in and out of the vessel with ease and without flashy intervention—quietly, the ocean does all the talking. Imagine that, a yacht that lets you feel the open seas at all times? Groundbreaking.
