8 Long Weekend Getaways

The phrase “long weekend” elicits a sigh of relief and a sudden surge of energy you thought was all but lost. This August long weekend provides an opportunity to take advantage of the time off to eat, drink, and adventure through a new city or region for a few days. From the furthest reaches of the Pacific Northwest to the small-town-big-town feel of Halifax, wherever you are in Canada, there is potential for exploration. To help with planning, we have rounded up a few of our favourite weekend-suitable trips from the NUVO archive.

For those Canadians luck enough to live on a train route to New York, we recommend spending at least part of your weekend visit in DUMBO. An acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, the district is an oft-overlooked gem in New York. Read our guide to Discovering DUMBO, New York City, here.

A mere two-hour drive east of Toronto lies the pastoral island community of Prince Edward County. Take a tour of the vineyards, sit by the lake and stay a while, or not, because it can easily be be done in a day too; choose your own adventure. Either way, we have A Visitor’s Guide to Prince Edward County, right here.

Calgary is an excellent staycation spot and with a burgeoning craft beer scene and a bid to be known as Canada’s “music city,” it’s also worth a weekend visit if you’re in an adjacent province. Read How to Spend 48 Hours in Calgary, here.

To visit Halifax is to experience the sensation of a big city magically shrunk to small town proportions. We’ve chosen quirky off-the-beaten-track spots for your guide to A Weekend in Halifax, here.

Skip the world’s first Starbucks in favour of ginger beer at Pike Place Market or macarons the size of sand dollars and chocolate-marshmallow donuts at a Capitol Hill bakeshop. Read were to stay, eat, and shop in our Visitor’s Guide to Seattle, here.

Accessible wilderness may sound like an oxymoron but it exists a hop, skip, and a ferry ride from Vancouver on the Sunshine Coast. With plenty of luxury eco-lodges to chose from and stunning views in surplus, for those willing to take to the water (or skies in a seaplane) it’s worth reading our guide to Exploring the Sunshine Coast, here.

A bit further afield than our other destinations, what Chicago lacks in proximity it makes up for in choice. We have An Art Lover’s Guide to Chicago (there’s more than just the bean) and a list of Chicago Walks for your to chose from.

Within a scenic two-hour drive of no less than six national parks, at the convergence of the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers sits Golden, British Columbia.
