Wine is booming in the Okanagan—has been for some time. Most of the wineries strung in a series of clusters along the length of the 200-kilometre-long Okanagan Valley are family owned, and none is more visible than the architecturally impressive Mission Hill Family Estate. Proprietor Anthony von Mandl’s latest venture in the Okanagan is the appointment-only Martin’s Lane Winery created in honour of his late father, Dr. Martin von Mandl. The Corten-clad building, designed by Seattle-based Tom Kundig, is carved into a hillside to harness gravity and minimize the movement of the grapes, where winemaker Shane Munn is focused on creating top-tier pinot noir and riesling.
